My name is Elva Hernandez and I became a member of the ABWA in December 2013.  I was invited by my friend and chiropractor, Dr. Kaylin Song.

As a member of the ABWA and NDBW, I like the strong leadership and positive learning environment.  I’ve never been a part of a group of powerful women in business that are so supportive.

I am currently a member of the NDBW membership committee.  I decided to get out of my comfort zone as a result of the challenge presented by Julie Burch when she spoke at a New Member Orientation.  She said to become a leader you need to step up and actively participate in the organization.

My favorite event was the February Meeting presentation by Joanna Rodriguez:  “Are You Talking to Me?!  The Power of Your Self-Talk”.   The message resonated with me because I’m in the middle of a self-discovery journey and I’m learning how my “business can never be bigger than me”.

Membership has helped me with professional and personal development.  It has also connected me with some amazing individuals who have a lot to offer.

Few people know that I was adopted by my maternal grandparents at the age of three and my name was changed from Valerie to Elva.  My grandfather passed away the day before my 8th birthday and we lived on income from social security.  Despite the financial hardship, I was the first in my generation of cousins in San Antonio to graduate with a college degree.

My proudest moment was retiring after 29 years of public service with the Dallas County Juvenile Department.

The best advice I ever received was “it’s in giving that we receive”.

My passions beyond business are spending time with family, friends, my dog Ellie, traveling, completing a challenging workout and watching professional basketball (Spurs) and football (Cowboys).
